Posture reminder vs break timer: what each can actually notice

EthicsLab Limited · Updated 2026-09-06

The useful difference is not branding. It is what the tool can see.

A break timer is honest about one thing: time passed. It cannot see whether you stood, walked, or stayed in the chair. Sitwise is built for the other question: were you sitting, and did the sit drift from the one you saved?

  • Break timerStarts when you start it. Fires on elapsed time. Treats standing still and sitting the same unless you remember to pause it.
  • Posture reminderWatches the current sit against a baseline. Can nag a slump. By itself it may ignore a beautiful sit that lasted three hours.
  • SitwiseDoes both. The score is personal to your desk. The sit clock pauses when you stand, step away, or pause the app.

If you only need a chime every hour, a timer is enough. If you want the reminder to follow the day you actually had, you need presence. That is the sit clock. Read sitting reminder for Mac and how Sitwise works.
